Each cakery seems to have its own terminology to describe their cakes. To clarify, here are the terms we use at Glorious Cakes.
Layer Cakes. 2 or 3 individual layers of cake (all the same dimension), stacked on top of each other, with a flavored filling or buttercream frosting sandwiched between layers. Layer cakes can be finished with any frosting and decorative treatment. Customized toppers or characters can also be added for a special touch.
We offer various shapes and sizes, and can discuss what will meet your needs during the consultation. Our standard layer cake serving is 4-1/2" high, 1" wide by 2-1/2" deep. Layer cakes are perfect for birthdays, showers, graduations, or any time you want to celebrate a special occasion.
Tiered Cakes. 2 or more layer cakes of different sizes, stacked on top of each other. Typically, each tier has a different diameter, usually with the largest diameter on the bottom, to the smallest for the top tier. These cakes are typical for weddings, and can be designed and decorated in spectacular ways. Small tiered cakes are also perfect for other occasions that require a truly special centerpiece.
Tiered cakes must be handled and transported with TLC! We highly recommend allowing us to deliver them to your venue. You may pick up small tiered cakes (2 tiers), but you must ensure that you transport the cake on a level surface. (car seats are not level!) All tiered cakes are constructed with a support dowel system. Even so, please drive and handle with care!! Once you pick up your cake, it's all your's!!
Novelty Cakes. Layered cakes OR tiered cakes that are decorated with a very clear novelty theme. As such, they display much decorative detail related to the theme. Your imagination helps make this type of cake incredibly special. From “all about baby”; to “golf fanatic”; to “the nature-loving outdoorsman”, the possibilities are endless!
Carved Cakes. As the name implies, these cakes are carved into a specific shape or character. Again, the possibilities are endless, and only limited by your imagination! Because of the intricate detail these cakes require, they are priced on a cake-by-cake basis.
Kitchen Cakes. Layered sheet cakes that are filled and frosted, but not decorated other than piped borders. These cakes are tailored specifically for larger groups (weddings or large gatherings), where a tiered cake is displayed and cut by the guests of honor, and then additional guest servings are provided by the kitchen cakes. Kitchen cakes are held in the prep area by your catering staff, and are not displayed.

Ever wonder why custom cakes are so pricey? Well, when you consider they are part culinary perfection, part artistry, part design and construction, and ultimately a centerpiece for your special event, you can begin to see that custom cakes require a lot more than popping some batter in the oven at 350 degrees! At this time, we do not offer gluten-free options. We will evaluate the need for doing so on an on-going basis. Additionally, clients should be aware that we do utilize dairy products, wheat, tree nuts and peanuts in our baking. Unfortunately, anyone with allergies or adverse reactions to these ingredients should avoid tasting our cakes.
